WARRINGTON Hockey Club’s senior teams recorded a clean sweep of victories at the weekend, with all four sides winning by single-goal margins.

The women’s first team put on an outstanding defensive display to ensure Chester’s high-flying seconds left Priestley College empty-handed on Saturday.

Despite the visitors dominating much of the play, goalkeeper Tracy Jackson proved unbeatable as she pulled off several superb saves, while Carrie Wright and Holly McCurrie both made last-ditch clearances to keep Chester out.

At the other end, Marian Taig scored what turned out to be the winning goal after she converted a right-wing cross from Meg Sutch.

The men’s firsts also beat high-flying opposition on home soil as they recorded a 2-1 win over Didsbury Northern’s fifths.

Ben Vickers put in a tireless performance and was rewarded with two more goals in what is proving to be a free-scoring season for him, taking his tally to 20.

They had to hang on at the end as Didsbury piled on the pressure, but a confident stop on the line from Scott Read in the dying seconds secured the victory.

The women’s seconds leapfrogged Wilmslow’s thirds by beating them 1-0 despite coming under early pressure from their hosts.

However, they weathered the storm and came close themselves through Becky Miller and Jenny Fox before Molly Rudd eventually put them ahead after a superb driving run.

The highest-scoring game of the weekend involved the men’s seconds, who fought hard to win 4-3 at their Denbigh counterparts.

Mark Hooper, Noal Philpotts and Gavin Brown put Warrington 3-1 up before the hosts fought back, but skipper Dan Sutton produced a neat finish from Rob Powell’s pass for the winner.

On Saturday, the men’s firsts travel to University of Liverpool’s seconds, push back 2pm, while the seconds are at home to Neston’s eighths.

The women’s firsts are on the road at Rhyl and District, push back 12pm, and the seconds welcome Triton to Priestley College, push back 12.45pm.
