GREAT Sankey High runners featured prominently in the first round of the Warrington Athletics Club Schools’ Cross Country League.

They swept the board in one race and achieved a number of other top-three places individually and as teams as around 350 runners featured at Walton Gardens on Saturday.

George Hill (9mins 17secs) was followed over the line by fellow Great Sankey students Dylan Squires (9mins 22secs) and Joe Weston (9mins 50secs) in the boys’ year 10-11 contest.

Their schoolmates Dylan Woodroffe (10mins 52secs) and Hayden Arless (10mins 56secs) came home behind Helsby's Ewan MacNab (10mins 30secs) in the year eight-nine race, one in which Great Sankey were the only team to complete.

They were team winners in the year seven boys’ run too, aided by Patrick Squires (11mins 33secs) finishing third while chasing Lymm’s impressive winner Erik Marshall (10mins 16secs) and Bridgewater’s Marcus Trevithick (11mins 9secs).

Molly Wormald (7mins 17secs) led from the start of her win for Great Sankey in the year seven girls’ race, helping her school win the team event in the process.

Bridgewater’s Emily Entwistle (7mins 26secs) and Kings’ Lucie Davies (7mins 41secs) followed her in.

In the year 10-11 event, Bridgewater’s Lucy Baxter (10mins 51secs) took first prize ahead of Boteler’s Olivia Baker (11mins 16secs) and Rebecca Hardwick (12mins 02secs.) Cardinal Newman’s Orla Gregory (10mins 44secs) was an excellent winner of the year eight-nine battle, with Bridgewater’s Jess Connolly (11mins 11secs) and Lymm’s Eva Ferris (11mins 31secs) leading the hunting group.

Bridgewater were the only team to complete in the age group.

Twenty-three schools were represented in the primary races.

Broomfields’ Eva Karalius (5mins 28secs), St Wilfrids’ Rhiannon Wilkes (5mins 29secs) and Broomfields’ Harriet Bell (5mins 34secs) led the girls’ event, while the boys’ contest was headed by Oughtrington’s Noah Kaariainen (6mins 52secs), Ravenbank’s Jack Marwood (6mins 53secs) and Chapelford’s Zac Chamun (7 mins 02secs).

St Wilfrid’s lead the girls’ team race with 56 points, with Broomfields, 62pts, and St Monicas, 86pts, in the mix.

In the boys’ team standings, Ravenbank are out in front with 39 points followed by St Monica, 52pts, and Moore, 72pts.
