HARRIET Knowles-Jones is on course for an appearance at another major athletics event.

The Warrington Athletics Club 19-year-old ran well inside the qualification time for this summer's European Junior Championships in Italy when clocking 4mins 15.66secs to cross the line second in the 1,500m in the BMC Grand Prix in Solihull on Saturday.

Current English national champion and 2012 world junior 800m silver-medallist Jess Judd finished ahead of her.

Knowles-Jones, daughter of former UK 1,500m champion Jayne, produced a time that was a fraction outside the club record and personal best she achieved when representing Great Britain in the 1500m final at the World Junior Championships in Poland last year.

The rising star from Lymm, who won medals at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in 2016 and 2015 - the year she also set a 1500m personal best in the IAAF World Youth Championships in Columbia, faces trials for July's Grosseto event in Bedford on June 17 and 18.

She may yet consider the 3,000m in Italy for Knowles-Jones broke Olympian Suzanne Rigg's 23-year-old Warrington Athletics Club record while racing in Watford earlier this month, with another time well inside the European Junior Championships requirement.

Meanwhile, Warrington's athletes took second place as they opened their Cheshire League season at Macclesfield.
