Crosfields 16 Wigan St Judes 31

CROSFIELDS’ unbeaten home record came to a sudden end on Saturday as a young Wigan St Judes side left Hood Lane with the spoils.

Joe Moore crossed twice in the first half for Soap and Hayden James’ effort gave them a second-half lead, but Mark Brennan’s side were made to pay for conceding a stack of penalties after the break.

Their indiscipline resulted in Matty Barber and skipper Jack Reid being sin-binned as they finished the game with 11 men.

"We know we were not good enough and credit to Judes, who deserved the win," Brennan said.

"A 9 1 penalty count didn't help us in the second half.

"Sometimes we just need to roll our sleves up and do the hard work and earn the right to play a little more.

"The lads are not stupid, they know we didnt perform to our best this week."

Soap got off to a great start as Reid’s short ball sent Moore through a gap and he raced home unopposed from 30 metres before Reid added the extras.

However, a handling error from Phil Brazendale gave Judes a way back into the game as the ball was worked out wide for Joey Brady to score, with Rob Collier adding the first of his six goals.

The game was end-to-end with both sides enjoying periods of pressure until Moore forced his way over midway through the first half.

Judes were once again able to punish poor Soap handling and weak defence on the left edge allowed Connor Parkinson to score, with Collier’s kick edging the visitors ahead.

That was the way it stayed until the 56th minute when intricate passing led to James crossing between the posts, with Reid’s conversion giving Soap a 16-12 lead.

The hosts could not hold the lead for long as they endured a torrid final quarter, with Gavin Rodden giving Judes an advantage they would not relinquish.

Collier added a penalty to extend the lead before David Fagin’s try all but sealed victory for the Wigan side.

Collier slotted a drop goal to extend the advantage before Barber did not heed a team warning and was sent to the sin bin.

Reid followed him shortly after for dissent and Judes took advantage of the extra numbers to send Andy Lavin over in the corner for the game’s final try.

Despite the result, Soap remain top of National Conference League Division Two ahead of a trip to Drighlington on Saturday, kick off 2.30pm.

Blackpool Scorpions 10 Crosfields A 48

CROSFIELDS A ran in nine tries on a successful trip to the Lancashire coast to move them up to third in the North West Men’s League Division Four.

Ian Boden’s side scored three tries in the opening 10 minutes, with Tom Sutherland, Josh Whitman and Jack Williams giving them an early 14-0 lead.

Whitman and Williams both doubled their tallies before the break to effectively end the game as a contest, with Blackpool grabbing a try right on half time to give them some solace.

Jordan Williams got himself on the scoresheet after the break and, despite another Blackpool try, Soap finished with a flourish as Alex Clutterbuck, Nathan Hamilton and Matty Thomason all got over the line.

Boden’s side welcome Eccleston Lions to Hood Lane in their next game on Saturday, May 20.
