TALENTED Warrington runner Harriet Knowles-Jones says she is already looking at next year’s targets after a “whirlwind” 2016.

The 18-year-old enjoyed medals and personal bests galore during the calendar year as she represented Great Britain at a number of events.

The Warrington Athletics Club runner ends the year having climbed to second in the UK under 20s rankings in the 1500m discipline.

There is not much respite for Knowles-Jones, whose mother Jayne is a former UK 1500m champion, as she is back in action on Saturday, January 7.

She has been chosen to represent Great Britain at the Great Edinburgh International Cross Country event and says she is gunning for a medal after winning silver at this year’s event.

Knowles-Jones also wants success at the European Junior Championships in July.

“I can’t even remember the start of this year, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind but it’s been brilliant,” she said.

“I really want to do well at Edinburgh. There is a strong European team competing so they will be good to go up against.

“There will be athletes from America as well so to get a medal would be really something.

“The European juniors on the track is in July as well. It will be my last one as a junior so I’d love to medal there.

“Apart from that, another year of more medals and more personal bests would be perfect!”

Her silver medal in Edinburgh proved to be just the start of a stellar year both on the track and in cross country for Knowles-Jones.

Despite finishing outside the medal places at the IAAF World Junior Athletics Championships, she set a new personal best in the 1500m.

Her time of 4mins 15.49secs was good enough to finish eighth in Poland.

She formed part of the Great Britain under 20s team that competed in the European Cross Country Championships and her third-placed finish won her an individual bronze medal and helped towards team gold.

“I’d say I’ll definitely remember Sardinia for a long time. It was such a nice place to compete,” she said.

“The teammates I had were great and I helped them to get team gold so it was a great memory for me.”
