STUDENTS at Priestley College finished third in two categories as a new team in the York Triathlon.

As well as Tri Priestley finishing third in the team relay and mixed relay event, Danny Kenny crossed the line seventh in the men’s super sprint competition.

Kenny completed the swim, bike and run in 43mins 50secs.

Priestley public services tutor Paul Mackinnon, who set up the team, finished fifth in the same event in 40mins 31secs.

Colleague Rebecca Thomas came home fourth in the women’s super sprint.

“It was my first triathlon so I was happy to finish as highly as I did,” said Kenny.

“I just saw it as a great chance to try something new and increase my fitness.”

Mackinnon added: “The team’s performance was beyond what I’d hoped and expected for a first triathlon and is a good sign for future competitions.”

“Not everyone wants to take part in the more traditional sports so this gives those people an opportunity to excel.

“It is one of the ultimate fitness tests and will be a real challenge to all those who get stuck in and take part.”

Tri Priestley is one of more than 30 enrichment activities on offer at college including everything from karate to creative writing.

More than 1,200 students took part in activities over the past year that tested their skills in engineering, music and sport.

Tri Priestley’s next event is on May 22 in Nantwich.
