WARRINGTON second team sit top of Cheshire Women’s League Division Five over the Christmas break after beating Neston fourth team 4-0.

Emma Frew banged in two goals and Ellen Jackson got her first of the season, with Abi Hynes topping off her player-of-the-match performance with a goal.

The men’s second team also continued their push for promotion from North West League Division Eight with a dramatic 2-1 win over Mossley Hill.

Warrington took the lead early on through Mark Hoooper, but then wasted a series of chances to make the game safe and eventually conceded an equalised.

Billy Gilbert was inspirational in midfield, breaking up numerous Mossley attacks and setting Warrington off with some incisive passing.

With minutes to spare, Matt Pettit found the back of the net from a well worked short corner to snatch the win.

The men’s first team lost 3-2 to Formby despite Mike Jones putting the ball in with a reverse hit from a near impossible angle and Rob Powell making a clever run before nutmegging the keeper.

All four Warrington teams return to action on Saturday, January 10.

Lymm Ladies’ visit to Bowdon thirds was one of only two games to survive Saturday’s weather, with the visitors going on to record a 6-1 success.

Forwards Natalie Riley and Helen Weston were finding gaps in the Bowdon defence after good build up play from a midfield four of Ashleigh Jackson, Alex Pepper, Suzie Willliams and Lisa Hartley-Woodrow.

It was Riley who put Lymm ahead from a penalty corner at a set piece, grabbing a second from a long corner won after Weston was sent clear by Meg Wilkin.

Wilkin added a third with a close range effort that saw the Bowdon goalkeeper hamstringing herself in the attempted save.

Bowdon decided to play on with no keeper and 11 outfield players, and for the middle period of the game Lymm lost rhythm, with Bowdon working hard to deny them space in the centre of the pitch.

A yellow card from the home umpire for Hartley-Woodrow when the ball hit her legs acted as a leveller, but when Pepper and Weston won the ball on halfway and played Wilkin clean through for a fourth before half time it proved one of the few occasions the visitors were able to exploit any advantage.

The second period saw Bowdon grab a consolation from a set piece, only for Wilkin to add a brace before Hartley-Woodrow closed out the scoring with a deserved sixth to keep Lymm top ahead of the break.
