Rylands 2 Pilkington 0

RYLANDS progressed to their third consecutive semi-final appearance in the Cheshire League Cup on Saturday in a game which saw three opposition players sent off.

A goal in each half from Joel Brownhill secured the 2-0 victory over Pilkington in an ill-tempered encounter at Gorsey Lane.

Rylands opened the scoring after 38 minutes when the in-form Brownhill raced clear to neatly beat the advancing keeper.

The goal led to a series of complaints from the opposition, which saw the goalkeeper dismissed for an outburst at the referee.

The second half began with the visitors enjoying good possession before the game erupted on 68 minutes when two more Pilkington players were dismissed for off-the-ball incidents after a foul by James Dykes.

The incident killed off the closely contested game, and Brownhill netted his second after 80 minutes when put through by Calum Wilson.

Rylands manager Dave Parr said: “Obviously the sending off incidents affected both teams and I must admit that the result was by no means certain until then.”

Mossley Hill Athletic 0 Eagle Sports 2

EAGLE Sports progressed to the quarter finals of the Liverpool FA Challenge Cup for the second successive season thanks to a 2-0 victory at West Cheshire League side Mossley Hill Athletic.

Building on the previous week’s Guardian Cup tie success, Eagle took the lead early on when, following good work from Chris Quirk down the right, the ball was put into the net by a home defender.

The win was sealed in the second half when Quirk got on the end of a long ball over the top before coolly slotting into an open goal.

Eagle Sports Reserves 2 Styal FC Reserves 4

EAGLE Sports’ hopes of progressing in the Cheshire League Reserve Division Cup took a hit on Saturday when they fell to a late defeat against Styal.

After a stalemate first half, goals came freely in the second period with the home side leading 2-1 thanks to Rob Hall and Gareth Williams.

Eagle were pegged back before the award of a penalty in the last 10 minutes allowed the visitors to take the lead and then finish the job in stoppage time.
