Harrogate Railway Athletic 2 Warrington Town 3TOWN ended their season on the right note after beating fellow strugglers Harrogate Railway 3-2 on Saturday.

Looking to avenge their worst performance of the season, a 2-0 home defeat against Harrogate in December, Town began brightly and took the game to their hosts.

Livewire striker Jimmy McCarthy was first to go close, forcing home keeper Liam Sutcliffe into a good save.

Town had the ball in the net in the 12th minute through top scorer Chris Gahgan but saw the goal ruled out for offside.

McCarthy's strike partner Rob Dutton was next to go close, but was again denied by Sutcliffe.

Town finally took a deserved lead in the 25th minute when midfielder Mike Grogan capitalised on a mistake to slot home under Sutcliffe.

Railway should have equalised two minutes later when striker Nathan James saw an easy chance go wide of the upright.

But Town continued to have the best of the game and it was no surprise when they extended their lead, Phil Hadland scoring with a bullet effort from 25 yards after a free kick had not been properly cleared by the Railway defence.

The second half was a far more competitive affair and Harrogate almost clawed themselves back into the game just after the hour but substitute David Henry scooped the ball over the bar.

Their breakthrough came with 22 minutes to go when tall midfielder Steve Smith flicked a header beyond Mottram.

Buoyed by that strike, Harrogate took the intiative and equalised six minutes later when Henry turned and shot past Mottram.

With a quarter of an hour to go, the game could have gone either way but it was Town's Maltese under 21 international Richard Chetcuti who provided the telling contribution, latching onto a pass by defender Mike Stewart before rounding Sutcliffe to slot home into the unguarded net.

Town: Mottram, Stewart, Fitzsimmons, Bowes, Kielty, Grogan, Hadland, O'Donnell, McCarthy (Chetcuti 46), Dutton (Lamb 80), Gahgan (Daniels 84). Sub not used: Smith.
