WARRINGTON Town manager Stuart Mellish says his players are “itching to make history” in today's final home game of the season against Prescot Cables.

Following Saturday’s 1-0 win over play-off chasing Glossop North End, Yellows need a single point to win the title and secure promotion to the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League’s top flight for the first time.

The result gives them a perfect opportunity to claim the title in front of their own fans, and Mellish says his side cannot wait to get out on the field.

“The players are itching for it; they want to get out there and make history,” he said.

“I was absolutely delighted with how it went at Glossop; we could have easily gone and played for the draw but we got the result we wanted and it sets it up brilliantly for Saturday to be a historic day for the club and the town.”

Captain and leading scorer Ciaran Kilheeney grabbed the only goal to ensure victory against the Hillmen, who started the contest with an impressive home record after losing only twice previously in front of their own fans this term.

Mellish says that made the result even more impressive.

“Glossop are not a bad side at all – they have only lost six home games in three seasons so we knew it would be a tough, open game,” the manager said.

“All three points are big but when you’re coming up to the final furlong of the season they get so much bigger.

“We’ve had a lot of attention over the past 18 months, so it was an opportunity for us to gain a lot of respect by going out there to win and the lads, to a man, were absolutely fantastic.

“I have to mention and give special thanks to the fans that travelled on Saturday as they were unbelievable, they made it feel like a home game and the players appreciated it so much.”

Yellows have one more hurdle to get over when Prescot visit Cantilever Park seeking revenge for a 3-0 home defeat to Town last month.

Mellish warned the visitors will be determined to spoil the party, but also believes he will have no problem keeping his players’ minds off the party and on the match.

“Since we came back into pre-season training in July, our mantra has been ‘Attitude, work-rate, desire’ and I will make sure we have all of that on Saturday,” he said.

“We still have a job to do; we owe it to the fans to go out there and put on a professional performance “We will give Prescot the respect they deserve. They are a good side who will be determined to spoil their local rivals’ party, but if we match their work-rate and determination we will win the game. Then it will be party time.”

Town will be presented with the silverware after the match if they avoid defeat.
