CROSFIELDS under 15s girls’ football team have been mixing it with opposition from ‘across the pond.’

The team hosted a friendly match against American club Broadneck under 16s, who are visiting the UK from Maryland.

Broadneck ran out 4-1 winners in the game at Grange Sports Club, but bonds were formed between the two sides that could see the Warrington outfit cross the Atlantic to play in Maryland in the future.

Stewart Whittaker, girls’ section secretary at Crosfields JFC, says the game was played in an excellent spirit.

“Personally, it highlighted why I do what I do,” he said.

“The girls have been lucky enough to win a few things in the five years I have been coaching.

“The club have also won competitions at regional and national level and I have seen a number of players go on to play for women’s teams at Liverpool, Bolton, Preston and Wigan.

“But nothing even comes close to watching a group of girls sit with a bunch of relative strangers, separated by thousands of miles of water, with one common interest...the beautiful game.

“The girls all swapped social media details, while parents and coaches alike enjoyed food and drink together.

“The footballing arm of friendship has stretched the full width of ‘the pond’ and we are planning a return visit in the next couple of years.”
