TOWN boss Stuart Mellish says the club’s historic promotion is a reward for significant effort over a three-year period.

The Yellows secured a rise to the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division with an emphatic 6-1 home win over Prescot Cables on Saturday.

More than 1,400 fans crammed into Cantilever Park to watch Town lift the trophy and Mellish, who was the club’s assistant manager before Shaun Reid left in February, expressed his delight at finally getting the job done.

“To finish with six goals at home, you couldn’t write it could you?” he asked.

“I’m absolutely over the moon.

"It’s been three years of hard work to be honest but this is a culmination of that and it’s absolutely fantastic.

“The crowd was absolutely fantastic and the atmosphere was brilliant today, but they have been all season – home and away – so to cap it off at home was different class.

“The game was over at half time, but we kept working hard in the second half and did a professional job like we have done all season.”

Promotion is the first step on the road ambitious chairman Toby Macorma hopes will lead to the Football League by the year 2020, and planning can now start for the club’s first season in the league's top flight.

Mellish revealed discussions over new signings have started already after a period of scouting.

“We’ve got a couple of deals almost done," he said.

"I can’t say too much at the minute but we’ve been working hard, watching games for the past four or five weeks with the realisation that hopefully we’ll get promotion and we can improve the squad a little bit.

“The chairman is right behind us, we’ve got our ‘2020 vision’ project and we’re on target for that so we’ve got to stay professional and keep working hard for it.”

Defender Craig Robinson scored the winning goal in Town’s FA Cup triumph over Exeter City last season and says Saturday was “right up there” in his view.

“It has to be up there with the FA Cup last year but for different reasons, that was a one-off but the main aim for the football club was to win the league so it’s right up there,” he said.

“This is just the beginning, the FA Cup was special but Saturday is the start of something really special for Warrington Town.

“The work Toby and the rest of the guys here have put in has given us a great platform to kick on and create something really special.”
