NOT for the first time Cantilever Park will be rammed with supporters aiming to roar Warrington to cup success tomorrow, Friday.

More than 2,500 packed into the compact ground as the minnow Yellows defeated Wales Conference side Merthyr Tydfil 3-2 after extra time to reach the quarter finals of the FA Trophy in the 1992-93 season.

That tie remains arguably Town's most memorable at home since the club's 1949 birth, with the match being delayed and gates being opened to all to ease the congestion of supporters attempting to gain entry.

Other famous Town occasions include the FA Vase Final 3-2 defeat to St Helens Town at Wembley in 1987 and the League Cup Final loss to higher division Winsford United on penalties at Manchester City's former Maine Road ground in 1993.

As for well-known people, writer Alan Bleasedale, of Boys From The Black Stuff fame, wore Yellow in 1969, while former Portsmouth FA Cup winner and champion Warrington Wolves fitness trainer Freddie Worrall managed the team for 13 years from 1953.

Worrall helped to nurture the career of Town's most famous son, England 1966 World Cup winner and one-time Liverpool record goal scorer Roger Hunt MBE, who is now an honorary Vice President of the Cantilever Park outfit.

On a night when the BBC cameras will be broadcasting live from Town's home for the first time, it seems fitting that Hunt was the scorer of the first goal shown on Match of the Day - 50 years ago.

Hunt's goal was the first in a 3-2 Liverpool win against Arsenal when he hooked Ian Callaghan’s cross over goalkeeper Jim Furnell in front of the Kop.
