ILL-DISCIPLINED bowling proved costly for Grappenhall as they slipped to a 38-run defeat at Cheadle on Saturday.

After winning the toss, Grappers skipper Adam Roylance invited the hosts to bat first but it was a decision he regretted as Cheadle scored consistently at a good rate.

Even with the regular loss of wickets, with Roylance the pick of the bowlers with 5-61, Cheadle were able to post an imposing total of 257-9 from 55 overs.

Sam Guest took 3-61, while overseas player Owen Lynch chipped in with 1-39 with his off-spin.

After Jamie Bye and Pete Barnes went cheaply in reply, Roylance, 30, and Lynch, 26, set about rebuilding Grappers' innings.

Both fell in quick succession, but Luke McCoy and Adam Green picked up the baton to give the visitors a sniff of victory.

Green top-scored with 71 and McCoy was dismissed for 67 and with them went Grappers' hopes of victory as they were dismissed for 219.

There was some club success over Cheadle for the seconds, who earned a comfortable, seven-wicket success at Broad Lane.

Bowling first, Ross Arrowsmith led the way with figures of 3-43, with Ben Cagna and Arthur Pennington taking two wickets each.

Matt Titchard and Josh Hayes grabbed one scalp each as the visitors were dismissed for 153.

Hayes then starred with the bat as his unbeaten 58 was the catalyst for an easy victory achieved with 19 overs to spare.

The thirds' first home game of 2017 was marked with a five-wicket win over Bramhall on Sunday.

Grappers restricted the visitors to 174-8 on an excellent batting wicket, with young spinner Akshat Pranesh taking 3-21.

In reply, Richard Holden smashed a fantastic 72, while Ben Bravington provided able support with 47 to steer Grappers home.

The firsts welcome Toft to Broad Lane on Saturday and the seconds travel to Oxton, while the thirds visit Didsbury on Sunday.
