DAVE Johns enjoyed a brief evening stint at Appleton Reservoir on Thursday evening, landing carp of 21-0-0, 20-4-0, and three lower-doubles.

He used a small PVA bag of soft pellet with pellet and fake corn on the hook.

Sadly, the rigours of spawning have caused the death of ‘The Big One’ at the same venue.

The mirror carp was found, spawn-bound, by members in the margin.

Previously unknown, it first came to the attention of anglers when it was captured by Mark Richards in 2012 at a weight of 32-4-0.

I had a chat to members at Statham Pool this week, who told me they were catching mainly small fish.

Armed with an unhooking mat, landing net, my trusty Diawa traveller rod and half a loaf, I enjoyed some stalking time.

The result? Three single-figure mirror carp that slurped in my floating bread as if it was their last meal.

After four hours without a bite at Budworth Mere, Steve Brookes was set for a move to another fishery.

However bream then started rolling over his bait, and he caught three slabs in as many casts.

He was rewarded with another four of the bronze beauties three hours on – all bigger.

They fell to sweetcorn and groundbait feeder and his trusty Hardy swing-tip rod.

On Friday, Carl Harrison and fishing buddy Clive were pleased after a visit to Grey Mist Mere.

He caught three tench on the first five casts and, although the bites slowed down, they both managed nine apiece.

All fell to feeder-fished pellet, while Clive landed one of our VS Fishery-stocked mirror carp as a bonus.

Eric Smith enjoyed a session at Cicely Mill Pool on Sunday, fishing method feeder with a couple of dead red maggots on the hook at about 15-20yds and feeding hemp over the top.

He caught two bream at around 4lb, a couple of tench and seven crucians.

Six of those weighed more than 2lb.

Following bleak reports earlier this season, other anglers have had good sport with crucians and bream.

Match organiser Ray Boden recorded another Mersey Series win on Saturday after putting 9-6-0 on the scales.

He fished his favourite method, pole and maggot, to land mainly roach, along with a few perch and a brace of skimmer bream.

Ant Higham, aka the ‘King of the River’, won our Mersey Series match on Sunday, landing 7-9-0 made up of eight skimmers along small roach and perch taken on groundbait feeder and maggot.

Martin Lenihan was second overall with 5-13-0.

Jimmy Byrne took full advantage of a favourable peg draw on the Trent and Mersey Canal to clock up another win in our latest disabled and over 60s match with 5-10-0 of roach and skimmers.

This week’s Woodshaw Junior Summer League fixture incorporated the Sherratt Cup, which was won decisively Dylan Anglesea with a mixed net of 12-11-0 taken on pole and pellet.

Tyler Davies was the runner-up with 9-12-0.
