OUR volunteers have put in hours of back-breaking work to combat weed explosion at Grey Mist Mere.

We’ve read the negative feedback online, and know this is not a long-term fix.

Following a meeting with the Environment Agency, we can can confirm a trial of Dyofix – which colours the water to inhibit weed growth – will start next March.

Ray Boden took home the winner’s purse for a second successive week in our Saturday Mersey Match, though with a lower weight than previously.

Nevertheless he put 10-12-0 of fish - including a 10oz skimmer - on the scales taken on pole and maggot tactics.

The ‘King of the River’, Ant Higham, nailed it in Sunday’s Mersey Series match with three bream to 5-8-0 along with a few perch.

They were all caught using maggot.

Ray Boden, who fished on the pole, and Paul Hitchen - who preferred using the tip - shared second spot.

Keith Daintith was a victor again in our disabled and over 60s match, held this week on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Rudheath.

His catch was made up of four perch, with the best weighing an amazing 4lbs.

Alan Brown was second with a net of roach and gudgeon.

A working party is planned for Sunday morning at Offa’s Dyke Fisheries.

This week they’ll be putting the finishing touches to a project that will protect stocks from otters who find easier pickings at our venue than their adjacent river home.

Volunteers should report to organiser Derek Cowell on arrival.

The Grayling Society is carrying out an end-of-season count of species caught on the River Dane.

If you can help, e-mail your catch numbers – along with any comments – and I’ll forward them on.

E-mail catch reports to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or ring me on 01928 716238.

Our headquarters at 52 Parker Street are open every Friday, from 7pm, for subscriptions, memberships, night permits and queries.
