ALAN Davenport had a successful trip to our stretch of the Severn at Montford Bridge.

After some judicious pruning to access his peg (our rivers do not have manicured banks they remain wild places as nature intended) he fished halibut pellets and a feeder packed with groundbait and feed pellets to take chub to 2lbs, but no barbel which can run to a decent size in this area.

A brief change to maggots on both the feeder and float saw him plagued with small dace and a tiny chub.

Existing member Lee Latham enrolled his young son Jay last week and wasted no time in introducing him to The Mount at Buckley.

Despite losing the first few fish they managed to land a carp of around 8lbs and countless perch that kept the youngster busy.

They also had a quick session on the Alyn where they caught a 2lbs wild brownie and a grayling well over 2lbs both taken on light fly tackle.

David Robinson also visited the same venue but opted for a different approach, using a small stick-float and maggot he landed quite a few grayling to 1.5lbs, dace and a few small trout.

Tony Rough just cannot get enough of our river fishing but after a number of successful trips to Shocklach he decided to brave the rough track and try further upstream at Worthenbury.

He fished a centre pin reel and trotted down maggot under an Avon float, and his regular loose-feeding with hemp and maggot soon brought a steady stream of small chub and dace along with trout and grayling to 1lb – in fact it was a bite a chuck.

Alan Sky made it down the track to be rewarded with grayling to 2lbs and plenty of action with small chub.

Our Mersey match on Saturday saw St Helens ace Danny Sixsmith clock up a win with 8-8-0 of roach and skimmers.

Match organiser Ray Bowden, who has had more second places this year than anyone I know, was true to form and not too far behind the winner with 8-2-0 of roach, perch, and a bonus pound chub.

Reduced flow conditions saw the Mersey weights much lower for our Sunday Series event, but Martin Lenihan fresh from a third place the previous day took the winner’s purse with 5-9-8 of roach, perch, and great to see tiny chublets on pole and maggot.

There have been occasions of late when members have either not booked on for their night session or tried to sneak an extra night.

These people are taking up places that members who play by the rules may wish to fish, so be warned if caught you may lose your night fishing privilege or even your membership.

Committee member Graham Belton won our Disabled and Over 60s match with 5-9-8, over 2lbs clear of second placed Jimmy Byrne on 3-2-8.

It was certainly nice to see veteran angler Alf Seddon back in the frame following a long absence due to illness.
