Crosfields 21 Millom 21

JACK Reid’s injury-time drop goal rescued a point for Crosfields as they halted their losing run on Saturday.

Mark Brennan’s side looked like slipping to a fourth straight defeat when Paul Evans hit a one-pointer of his own to nudge Millom ahead in the 80th minute.

However, Reid’s dramatic intervention in the fifth minute of injury time ensured a share of the spoils at Hood Lane.

Soap started well, forcing an early error and Ash Cornelia forced his way over after the ball was spread wide from the resulting scrum.

Millom hit back and tries from Ethan Kelly and Owen Myers, both converted by Lee Postlethwaite, gave them a 12-6 lead.

Postlethwaite added a penalty to give the visitors a two-score lead, but a dropped ball from the restart gave Soap possession and Chris Hull brushed off the defence to cross the whitewash.

Myers doubled his tally before the break and another Postlethwaite penalty gave the Cumbrians a comfortable, 20-10 lead at the break.

As they have done plenty of times this season, however, Soap found a way back into the game from a losing position.

After Nathan Taylor’s kick return got them deep into enemy territory, Cornelia dummied his way through a stretched defence for his second try.

Crosfields cranked up the pressure and it eventually told when Reid’s pass sent Cornelia through the line to complete his hat-trick, with Reid’s extras levelling the scores at 20-20.

A nail-biting final 10 minutes followed, with Evans hitting the post with his first drop goal attempt before finding the target with his next.

The referee indicated there were five minutes remaining and in the last of those, Reid remained calm to secure a thrilling tie.
