Dewsbury Celtic 18 Woolston Rovers 26

HEAD coach John Fieldhouse says Woolston Rovers are still “a work in progress” despite victory at Dewsbury Celtic on Saturday.

Glyn Roberts crossed twice for the Green and Golds while there were also tries for Chris Twigg, Harry Files and Connor Muir, with Will Chadwick adding three conversions.

After the game, Fieldhouse was keen to keep feet on the ground.

“That was a very pleasing victory over a side who are always difficult to play against especially at home,” he said.

“We built the win on a fast start that saw us build up a 12-0 lead but the main reason that we managed to win the game was our defence.

“We are still a ‘work in progress’ as there is plenty of improvement to be made, particularly in our ball control and kicking game, but overall I am really happy with how we performed.”

Rovers opened the scoring early on when Lewis Hoarty put Roberts over in the right corner, with Chadwick adding the touchline conversion.

Chadwick was on the mark with the boot again after Thailand international Twigg brushed off two defenders to score, giving the visitors a 12-0 lead.

Danny Thomas opened the hosts’ account shortly before the break to reduce the lead, but Rovers flew out of the traps in the second half.

After Matt Clarke broke through the Celtic defence, Cameron Davies slipped the ball to Roberts and he dummied his way through for his second try.

Files then went down the blind side from the base of a scrum to score on the right and put Rovers in command.

However, converted tries from Paul Foulstone and Danny Lee reduced the visitors’ lead to four points and set up an interesting finish to the game.

Muir eased any nerves in the Woolston camp when he danced round the Celtic defence to score on the left.

Fieldhouse’s side are back in Yorkshire on Saturday to take on Dewsbury Moor Maroons, kick off 2.30pm.

Westhoughon Lions 40 Woolston Rovers A 16

ROVERS’ A side saw their unbeaten start to the campaign come crashing down in a comprehensive defeat at Westhoughton.

Adam Files crossed twice for Rovers to go with another effort from Alex Dunne, with Jake Eccles adding two conversions.

“That wasn’t anything like what we have been producing this season and we got exactly what we deserved,” coach Andy Penny said.

“We were without some key players but that doesn’t excuse the performance.”
