RUGBY league referees have been honoured for their service.

Stephen Dean and Tara Jones shared the Eric Lawrinson Referee of the Year award at the Warrington Rugby League Referees’ Society annual presentation event.

The award, voted on by referee coaches and appointments officers across the sport, saw the two recipients tied on equal votes.

Dean had a successful 2016 season, refereeing marquee youth and junior matches within the community game and was also awarded the North West Youth Rugby League Referee of the Year.

He said: “I’m gobsmacked. To be recognised for my performances throughout the season is overwhelming.”

Jones made her National Conference League refereeing debut in 2016, being the first female referee to do so in six years.

“It’s been a pretty successful season, and I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved this year,” she said.

The Young Referee of the Year award went to Ollie Maddock for the second year in a row; while Most Improved Referee of the Year was awarded to Phil Sailsbury.

The Joe Manley Cup for services to the society was presented to Nick Woodward.

Former society secretary and treasurer, Sue Williams, was thanked and presented with flowers and a gift card for 10 years of service in an off-field role.
