LATCHFORD Albion have made a big step off the field by securing the help of a rugby league legend to assist their progress.

Warrington Wolves icon and current Wales Rugby League president Mike Nicholas has accepted the role of club ambassador, and director of rugby Mike Byron said he was delighted to have the legendary prop on board.

He said: “Having Mike's lads returning to the club this year has strengthened our squad and following conversations, Mike himself was keen to be part of the great journey we are on and we are only too proud to have him on board.”

On the field, head coach Lee Smith has been using some unexpected free time to sharpen his team’s skills to continue their good start.

They enjoyed a free weekend last week as their game with Wigan St Patricks was called off and Smith says his players have used the time well.

“Having 3 wins from 3 sets the tone for the season but we can improve in certain areas,” he said.

“The lads have committed to extra training to allow us to achieve the standard of performance that they are capable of and that will also allow us to reach our goals"
