Warrington drivers soak up the sunshine at Oulton Park
11:06am Thursday 23rd August 2012 in Sport
Lymm’s Phil Nelson in his 1600cc Van Diemen RF86
WARRINGTON racers were out in force in the late summer sunshine at Oulton Park, with three local drivers competing across three different championships.
Firstly, Lymm’s Phil Nelson finished 13th of 27 in his 1600cc Van Diemen RF86 in the Avon Tyres Formula Ford 1600 Northern Championship for pre 1990 cars.
Controlling his temperature gauge in the heat was a diffficult task, but Nelson manahed to improve from 15th in qualifying despite losing places in the first corner melee.
A similarly good race from Warrington’s Tom McArthur saw him improve from 11th to 10th in his first season of racing in his 1600cc Van Diemen LA10 in the Avon Tyres Formula Ford 1600 Northern Championship for post-1989 cars. Finally, Mike Fry from Lymm was racing his two-litre Lola T86/90 in the BIGprofile Sports 2000 Championship. Following a disappointing series of results in last year’s races, Fry’s previously misfiring car is back to full fitness and lying in fourth place in its class.
The first race saw Fry finish in 14th place and first in his class, finishing 12th overall and second in class in the second race to complete an excellent weekend for his championship ambitions.
