WHAT a way to end Warrington Rowing Club’s 25th anniversary year!

Mathilde Tavernier beat the British indoor rowing record for the girls’ 11-year-old age group.

In a two-minute piece on the Concept II rowing machine, she recorded a distance of 511 metres, beating the previous mark by more than two metres.

More remarkably, this was achieved in an otherwise ordinary training session and not in a competitive environment.

Having taken up rowing only last year, Mathilde had to race through the whole season at a year above her age group as there were no competitive events for 10 year olds.

The record breaker follows up on her success at the British Indoor Rowing Championships in 2010 when, again racing in a category above her age group, she won a silver medal behind fellow Warrington rower Rachel Ozsanlav-Harris.

Mathilde will be returning to this year’s British Indoor Rowing Championships on March 25, when she will be a strong favourite to win her age category and potentially beat her own record again.
