SOME anglers make a habit of catching fish no matter how harsh the conditions.

These anglers use a combination of water-craft and knowledge to locate their target fish and then make every effort in getting the presentation of their bait right to secure a capture.

One such angler is Jeff Mowberry, who recently targeted the carp in Belmont Pool on an overnight session.

After two false alarms, Jeff finally made contact with a good sized carp at 9am.

He then endured a hard battle to gain control of the fish, which finally graced the net some 10 to 15 minutes later.

Jeff’s reward was a beautifully conditioned mirror carp in fine winter colours and weighing 23lb.

The successful tactics consisted of a small pop-up boilie on a long hook-link fished close to one of the pool’s features.

Prior to being frozen over again last weekend Lymmvale had continued to show positive signs of fish feeding, with several tench to around the 6lb mark being landed along with a bream and a surprise eel.

The carp continue to prove elusive with only the odd fish showing but this is typical of the venue, with its deeper water taking a long time to warm up and help the carp to become more active.

The club can confirm that it has secured permanent night fishing rights on its water at Milton Brook Fishery, near Chester.

Members who wish to night fish must arrive before 8pm and must not leave before 6am.

Some members have already taken advantage of the extended fishing times at this venue and have reaped the rewards by landing carp to 19lb.

The River Dane above Holmes is once again providing river anglers with some very good grayling sport, with quality chub around the 4lb mark falling to legered on float-fished maggot.

It remains too cold for barbel to feed in earnest but the odd accidental capture can occur with anglers using maggot.

This often results in a battle supreme as a barbel will test any light tackle being used.

The major restoration work that has been carried out over the last year or so around Whitely Pool is almost complete.

A hardcore surface has been laid on the car park and track leading down to the stores area.

Fencing has been erected and pegs have been reclaimed and restored. The improvements will provide members with car parking and access of a standard not seen on this water before.

The club would like to thank the members who have worked so hard in carrying out these improvements.
