WARRINGTON Anglers Association’s Wigan waters are currently very quiet with few members venturing out into the cold.

Barry Walsh, one of our Wigan bailiff team leaders, managed a few hours at Woodshaw Reservoir at the weekend, his first fishing session there for over twelve months.

I am pleased to say he had a well-deserved net of nice chunky roach to ¾ lb on pole and maggot while other members fishing also had roach and chub with one chap having some nice rudd.

The Grey Mist work teams are making great inroads into improving the pathways and pegs around the lake but of course they can’t do everything.

The team wants to do a full clean up and prune back the undergrowth and bushes before everything begins to grow and the birds start to nest.

Time is tight on that score so any help would be great and Reg Lewis will be on site from 8.30am if you can help.

The weather had improved dramatically by Monday so the Disabled & Over 60s group could hold their weekly match on the Bridgewater canal.

This week the nineteen plus stalwarts turned out but the fish didn’t and the results were dire as just a few perch took the bait, but it’s still better than sitting in front of the telly and a lot more sociable!

These guys are certainly keen and after that biteless day I have just seen two of those same regulars going to fish along the canal at Preston Brook, towards the tunnel.

They know they will get plenty of roach there as it seldom fails to produce.

The River Dee is still worth a visit, with mixed nets of roach, chub, grayling and sea trout, which anglers are still catching in good numbers.

Please keep sending in your catch reports as they help both fellow members and the management committee in their continuous fishery evaluation.
