TWO of Wolves’ new signings will have to pass last-minute fitness tests to play against Castleford Tigers on Saturday.

England international centre Ryan Atkins and New Zealand forward David Solomona, who both arrived at the club during pre-season, picked up knocks in Wolves’ 58-0 thrashing of Harlequins at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Sunday.

Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith has revealed that the two players will be scrutinised by medical staff and rested until later in the week before the final decision is made.

“We’ll have to keep an eye on Atkins as he got some concussion early on and Solomona picked up a lower leg injury,” said Smith.

“We’ll need to moniter them throughout the week but some of these things may settle down over time.”

It could be a blow for Smith, who would have ideally fielded an unchanged side after an electric season opener that saw a rampant home side score 11 unanswered tries.

But the performance should ultimately keep confidence sky-high for when Wolves travel to Castleford on Saturday, kick off 5.45pm, to face a Tigers side who are flying off the back of their win at Leeds Rhinos.

And Wolves are not short of players to fill any gaps as the squad has strength in depth, even with Chris Hicks and Jon Clarke still expected to be unavailable after pre-season surgery.

Vinnie Anderson will come straight into the 17 if Atkins is not fit, while Lee Mitchell, Mike Cooper, Tyrone McCarthy and Matty Blythe could all fill any gap left by impact-sub Solomona.

Cooper would provide prop cover and is probably favourite now that Mitchell, McCarthy and Blythe have signed dual registration terms with Ian Millward’s Championship side Leigh Centurions.

However, Smith could call on one of the three 21-year-old back rowers, who all figured in the under 20s friendly at Wigan on Saturday, and utilise either Ben Harrison or Ben Westwood at prop instead.
