WARRINGTON almost pulled off a remarkable victory against Bollington in Cheshire County Cricket League Division One on Saturday.

Bollington, who were 199 for 3, lost their last eight wickets for 27 runs with Warrington captain Steve Heydon the chief destroyer, taking five wickets for 50 runs.

A tremendous Warrington partnership of 99 between Chris Kirby, 65, and C Heaphy, 77 not out, made up ground after lying 54 for 4.

With four required for victory off the last delivery, Warrington could only manage a single and had to settle for a draw.

Warrington’s second XI gained league and cup wins at the weekend.

They defeated Irby by 111 runs in the league clash.

Middle order hitting from T Balmer and his merciless compatriot B Bray guided Warrington to victory.

Wickets fell frequently throughout the Irby innings and the 228 for 9 total never looked in trouble as Irby were skittled for 117.

Sixteen-year-old Charlie McElroy, 48 not out, shared an unbeaten partnership with 14-year-old Matt Reagan, 54 not out, in Sunday’s four-wicket cup defeat of Bredbury St Marks.

After Warrington were 44 for 6 from their opening nine overs, the youngsters chased Bredbury’s 144 for 8 total and pushed their team home.

Charlton had earlier softened up Bredbury’s top order with figures of 3 for 31.

Warrington’s third string defeated Birkenhead Park by one wicket to claim their second success of the season.

Wes Charlton bowled really well with a five-wicket haul, while veteran Brian Boys, 58, batted brilliantly with useful support from Waldron and Houghton.

Warrington’s fourth XI lost by four wickets against Irby’s third team after finding runs difficult to achieve on a wet wicket.

Only a watchful Derek Bate managed to master the pitch with 36 runs in the team’s total of 102.

Some accurate bowling from Greg Atkins, Bruce Jardine and James Tilstone took the game into the last over before Irby finished on 104 for 6.
