SOME interesting reports from around the rivers from members of Warrington Anglers’ Association this week.

Chris Dyer and Jamie Hankinson set out for the Ribble on Sunday but decided to try the Wyre, which they had not fished before.

The result was loads of chub and dace and a new personal best 7lb 2oz bream for Chris, taken on maggot.

Jamie favoured the roaming approach and had chub to 3lbs 8ozs on dead bait, while on the same dead bait he had a 10lb pike.

While he was playing the pike, one of its much bigger relatives decided it looked like a tasty morsel and gave him a fight for it! Jamie also had a perch of 1lb 2ozs on worm.

Chris Edwards chose the Vyrnwy at Llananynech, where he had a mixed bag of grayling to 1lb, chub and dace to 1lb and a bonus 3lb sea trout on Sunday.

Interestingly, he was targeting the barbel and knew they were there because as he was feeding hemp they were rattling and popping open his feeder to get to the hemp.

All the signs of barbel in the peg were apparent but nothing he tried on the hook would tempt a bite until he connected with a big fish that screamed off and then snapped him on an underwater snag.

The Dane is still fishing well for all anglers, including a father and son duo.

Chris Hands Snr had a good bag of grayling, while son Chris had six chub to 4½lbs.

Members are reminded that it is barbless hooks only on the Mersey and keepnets may only be used in matches.

The catch of the month winner for June is Steven Lloyd with a 13lb 1oz bream from big Sandiway, backed up by another of 12lbs 6ozs both taken in the same session.

The June junior winner is one of our newest members, nine-year-old Courtney Wright, who decided to take up fishing with her young sister Olivia.

The girls were bought WAA licences and a three-metre whip each and taken by their dad to Grappenhall trees on the Bridgewater for their first afternoon session.

Olivia had 23 roach, perch and gudgeon and Courtney a similar catch of 20+ small fish.

These girls are quick learners and the ‘just one last cast’ plea gave them all a shock when it turned out to be a 2lb 12oz eel for Courtney.

Keep your entries coming in, the July prizes are now up for grabs! Let me have your catch reports on 01928 716238, fax 01928 713898 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
