ELEVEN members of Warrington Athletics Club have been selected to represent Cheshire at the National Schools Championships to be held at Gateshead International Stadium at the weekend.

Club sprint trio Luke Miller-Briggs (senior 100m), Martyn Corcoran (intermediate 200m) and Peter Morgan (senior 400m) will test their speed against the country’s top sprinters, while Great Britain international Heather Timmins will compete in a high-class senior 1,500m field.

Three of the younger members of Warrington's middle-distance section have also been selected and they will make their debuts at the championships.

Jack Gleave will join his teammate and double North of England champion Sam Dykes in the junior 800m event, with Harry Ellis competing in the intermediate 1,500m.

The four remaining athletes are Warrington Sports Personality Team of the Year members Lawrence Walker and Mat Jackson (both senior 2,000m steeplechase) and North of England champions Dan Cliffe (senior 3,000m) and Stephen Broadhurst (senior 1,500m).

Phil Hicken, who coaches the seven middle-distance athletes and is the current Warrington Sports Personality Coach of the Year, said: “All 11 athletes have had to work extremely hard to gain selection for these championships and they are a credit to both themselves and Warrington Athletics Club.

“What is most pleasing for me is that these 11 athletes make up the largest contingent of Cheshire athletes from any one club which is recognition of all the hard work undertaken by the coaches, team managers and parents at Warrington Athletics Club.”

Meanwhile, Warrington Athletics Club remain in top place in their division after the third round of the North of England League which took place at Longford Stadium in Trafford.

With one match remaining on home ground at Victoria Park, the team look to be on their way to promotion as champions.

The club had 30 winners from the 33 individual A and B events, and also won all the relays.
