WARRINGTON golfer Anthony Sproston has missed out on joining Phil Archer at the Open Championship after a disappointing second round in local final qualifying on Tuesday.

Sproston, who is from Winwick and appeared at the Open in 2003, produced a fine performance to win the regional qualifying event at Coventry Golf Club last week, with a round of 67 putting him top of a 108-man field.

That allowed him to progress to the local final qualifying event at West Lancashire Golf Club, putting him in sight of an appearance in this year’s Open at Birkdale between July 17 and 20.

With only four of the 96-strong field qualifying for the Open, Sproston was second after a first round 71 at West Lancashire but went round in 81 on Tuesday to leave him in tied 18th position on eight over par.

Birchwood Golf Club’s Steven Stiller had earlier bowed out in regional qualifying, with a round of 77 at Rochester and Cobham Park Golf Club leaving him in joint 69th position, while Lymm’s Stephen McCarthy was tied 104th at Pleasington with a round of 85.

Bill McColl, of Leigh Golf Club in Culcheth, was joint 50th in his regional qualifying event at Old Fold Manor Golf Club with a round of 76, while clubmate Andrew Baguley was joint 57th at Pleasington with a 78.
