WARRINGTON Rowing Club's quadruple sculls crew of Tom Pearson, Chris Johnstone, Mike Pownall and James Whitehead were defeated in the first round of the Fawley Challenge Cup.
They lost to an Argentinian crew from Tigre Boat Club in the club’s first ever appearance at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta.
Clubmate Gael Tavernier, who recently won three gold medals at the National Veteran’s Regatta, will compete in the Veteran’s Regatta at Henley at the weekend.
Warrington finished second at the Runcorn Junior Regatta on Saturday after picking up four gold medals as well as five silvers and three bronzes.
Claudia Wright won gold in the girls’ junior 13 single sculls and also teamed up with Louise Bailey to win the double sculls, while Holly McMullen also took gold in the mixed junior 12 single sculls and Oliver Brierley won the boys’ junior 14 single sculls.
Beth Laidlaw took silver in the girls’ junior 13 single sculls and with Daisy Dell in the double sculls, while Hannah Lester, Susie Clarke, Holly McMullen, Daisy Dell and cox Claudia Wright were second in the quadruple sculls.
Beth Pickering and Rachel Harper also finished second in the girls’ junior 15 double sculls, while Matthew Pownall and Henry Balcerak received the silver medal in the boys’ junior 14 double sculls.
Bronzes went to Beth Pickering in the girls’ junior 15 single sculls, James Moss in the boys’ junior 13 single sculls and the girls’ junior 13 quadruple sculls crew of Caitlyn Anderson, Lucy Shard, Louise Bailey, Sophie McQuillian and cox James Moss.
