WHILE they may have been flying through largely smooth air in 2024, Warrington Wolves have hit a bit of turbulence in recent weeks.

As such, they head into Hull FC’s visit to The Halliwell Jones Stadium tomorrow with the aim of bouncing back both in terms of result and performance.

Salford Red Devils became just the second team to beat them this year after Catalans Dragons on Saturday as The Wire failed to fire in a 17-12 defeat.

They had managed to get over the line against Leigh Leopards the previous week despite a similarly patchy display, but Sam Burgess insists he has not seen anything to overly concern him in the past two weeks.

“I’m pretty calm about it – I’d obviously much rather we got the result but we look at the performance. The outcome is secondary,” the head coach said.

“I just thought we didn’t perform to our standards but I can’t fault their effort.

“They tried their backsides off to win the game but we just lost too many moments that were important. Those moments we have to get better at.

“We had an opportunity to win the game, but we just didn’t. I’m not overly stressed about it.

“Defensively, we were pretty sound. We got broken down a couple of times but we can fix those things.

“We’re not leaking a huge amount of points but we’ve just got to be a bit tidier on the other side of the ball.”

Warrington will be heavily favoured to get back on the horse against a beleaguered Black and Whites side who are led by a former Wire favourite in Simon Grix, who is Hull’s interim head coach following the departure of Tony Smith, who was in charge for the majority of Grix’ 179-game spell at the club between 2006 and 2014.

They have won just once this season and have conceded 50 points or more in four of their last six games.

However, Burgess insists he is basing his opinion of tomorrow’s opposition on a much-improved display that saw them go down 18-12 to Leeds Rhinos in their most recent fixture on Sunday.

“They’ve had a lot of change and the club have got their own things happening,” he said.

“What’s really big for us is to focus on our own performance – we missed the jump last week and we couldn’t get into the flow of our own game.

“We have to try and fix that up this week regardless of what Hull will bring.

“I’ll take them off last week and they had a go. They had some young guys in there with a lot of enthusiasm and they’ll get guys like (Jake) Trueman and (Tom) Briscoe back this week, who will add something to them.

“We’re playing at the top level and it’s competitive – you don’t make the first team without having the mindset of wanting to be competitive.

“We can only control what we’re bringing to the game, and we’ve got to get our game better than it was last week.

“We’ll manage them as best we can – they will break us down at times but it’s about how we manage it.

“We’re on a short turnaround and we’ve changed our training around to give us the best possible chance of a performance on Friday.

“Playing a team that’s got nothing to lose is a dangerous position to be in, but our challenge is and always has been in the room.

“It’s about getting our attitude right and bringing our best game on Friday night.”
