SUNDAY’S Challenge Cup quarter-final victory will be remembered by Warrington Wolves fans for a long time.

For the players and head coach Sam Burgess, however, it has had to be pretty much forgotten already as their focus shifts to Leigh Leopards’ visit to The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday.

With a cup semi-final against Huddersfield Giants – to be played at the Totally Wicked Stadium on May 19 – to look forward to, their task before then is to keep themselves in a handy Super League position in the four games between now and then, starting with the clash with Adrian Lam’s men.

And Burgess insists his players will look to hit their visitors with the same “ferocity” that saw St Helens succumb 31-8 at the weekend for what was The Wire’s first victory over their neighbours since June 2021.

“It’s business as usual,” the head coach insisted.

“The game is done now – we’ve put it to bed and we’re getting on with Leigh this week, but the camp is in good spirits.

“We’ve got to be able to back it up – that’s the next part.

“We’ve been consistent on both sides of the ball so this week is no different – we do the same prep, we attack it with the same ferocity, we look at their strengths and areas we think we can exploit.

“They’re a great group and are pretty grounded with where we’re at. It’s only early in the year.

“It’s a great win for the club and the players deserved it. I gave them plenty of praise for it, but we’ve closed it off.

“Whether we win or lose, we review it and move on without dwelling on it.

“We’ve got Leigh in front of us on Saturday and I don’t think they will be too worried about our result on Sunday.

“They will just be trying to beat us, so we’ve got to be in the same mindset.”

Having exceeded all expectations last year to finish in the Super League play-offs and lift the Challenge Cup, the Leopards have found things more challenging this year having suffered injuries to key players.

Skipper John Asiata, hooker Edwin Ipape, full-back Gareth O’Brien and former Wire prop Robbie Mulhern will be among those unavailable to Lam on Saturday as they look for just their second Super League win of the season.

However, Burgess believes the Leopards’ struggles are not reflective of the team they are.

“I don’t think their league record serves them correctly – I think they’re a better team than their record says,” he said.

“We’ll treat them with the respect they deserve, so it’s back to business.

“They’ve got a couple of guys out – Asiata’s a wonderful player, they miss Robbie Mulhern when he doesn’t play and Ipape the hooker is dynamite, so they’re having a rough time with it as most clubs do. We’ve not had an easy run with that stuff either.

“They’ve got plenty going for them still.”
