MARK Beesley has paid tribute to Warrington Town midfielder Sean Williams after he hit a major appearance milestone.

The Yellows vice-captain turned out for the club for the 200th time on Easter Monday as he led the team out against Darlington at Cantilever Park.

Those appearances have come across two spells – Williams was among former manager Paul Carden’s first signings when he took charge in October 2016, staying for what remained of that season and a full season after before leaving to join Altrincham.

He then returned in 2021 and has been a part of the furniture ever since, playing a crucial role as the club won promotion to the National League North last season and continuing to do so in their first ever Step Two campaign, starting every league fixture.

“He’s been brilliant for me,” Beesley said of Williams.

“He’s our vice-captain and never really misses a game, he’s always around and is a great leader in the dressing room.

“He’s been an outstanding player for this club. To play 200 games for the club is testament to him and hopefully, there’s many more.”

A 3-1 defeat on Monday was Town’s fourth home loss in a row and ended any realistic hope of gatecrashing the play-off places for the campaign.

With three games of their campaign remaining, they are mathematically assured of finishing no lower than 15th but finishing in their current position of 12th or higher would mean ending their first ever season at this level in the top half of the table.

On Saturday, however, they face the tough task of visiting a formidable Tamworth side who will secure the league title if they avoid defeat against Beesley’s side.

Now, the manager is focusing on making sure what has been a superb campaign does not peter out.

“This group of players have been outstanding for this club and to even be speaking about the play-offs with four games to go is testament to how far they’ve come,” he said.

“We’re probably not going to get there but that doesn’t mean we won’t keep fighting and pushing to do better.

“It’s up to me, the staff and the players now to dust ourselves down.”
