WARRINGTON Wolves piled the points onto London Broncos for the second time in a week on Saturday evening.

However, it was the zero points conceded that pleased head coach Sam Burgess the most as The Wire made serene progress to the Challenge Cup quarter finals.

A try in the very first minute from Josh Thewlis, who finished with a brace, meant Warrington were ahead for the entire game bar the opening seconds, and their 42-0 victory meant they have scored exactly 100 points against the Broncos in the space of a week.

This time, though, they achieved their target of keeping their opponents off the scoresheet.

They had to scramble to do so at times, particularly in the first half when Matty Ashton came up with an excellent tackle to hold Gideon Boafo up with the score at 6-0, while Alex Walker dropped the ball over the line after the break having beaten Matt Dufty in an aerial challenge.

However, Burgess declared himself delighted with his side’s defensive attitude.

“I was happy, but it was a funny game,” he said.

“It’s not the easiest playing a team twice in the space of a week, and I think we saw a bit of that in the St Helens-Leeds game the other night.

“There’s a bit of déjà vu around but I was happy we got the job done.

“I was really happy with the zero against – we were chasing that last week and missed out, but we got it tonight. I was probably happier with that than anything else.

“Matty Ashton saved a try in the first half when he probably didn’t have to, which shows me how much he cares about what we’re doing.

“Kingy (Toby King) saved one in the second half and we probably got a bit lucky with the one they dropped under the crossbar, but I liked their effort.

“I was happy with them last week and I was happy with them again.

“Our challenge probably sits inside our room rather than outside it, and we’re overcoming that with greater ease, which is good.”

The game saw Papua New Guinea international make his Wire debut in the centres while Matty Nicholson also returned to the side, with both having been kept out of action by injuries sustained in pre-season.

Both players marked the occasion with tries, with Tai scoring a powerful effort before the break while Nicholson profited from a Thewlis offload to round off the scoring late on.

Burgess admitted Tai was probably shy of being fully ready to play but was happy to see him show what he could do.

“I was happy with Matty and Rod. Rod was probably a week underdone – we weren’t planning on playing him this week but we thought it was the best time to see what he could bring,” he said.

“I was happy he got over and scored some points – the boys really love what he brings and he’s a great bloke to have around.

“It’s good to see Matty Nic back – he’s had a pretty frustrating injury so it’s good that he’s come through it.”
