WARRINGTON Athletics Club’s under 13s boys team brought home medals from the North of England Road Relays staged at Birkenhead Park.

Euan Lawton, Isaac McGuffie and Oliver Davenport clinched second place to claim silver.

Lawton led the team off on the first stage and came home in fourth place in 11mins 20secs, the sixth fastest time of the race.

He handed over to McGuffie who took the team into the lead with the seventh equal fastest time of 11mins 23secs.

Davenport took over for the final stage and with the 12th equal time of 11mins 35secs brought the team home as runners-up.

Another team medal looked on the cards for the club but the under 17s team of Esme Heavey, Hannah Hull and Imogen Wharton got caught up in a bizarre incident which led to them being disqualified.

Heavey took on the first stage and recorded 13mins 46secs, the fourth fastest of the race.

Hull then clocked 13mins 29secs to hand over in fourth place.

On the final stage Wharton’s 13mins 37secrd fs was the third fastest of the race and brought the team over the finish line in third place.

Unfortunately, on stage two Hull, during a loop on the lap along with three other teams who were all close together at the time, took a wrong turning meaning that they cut around 350 metres off the lap.

They turned along a path about 180 metres before the correct turn, a point which was not covered by a marshal.

The four teams finished the race in the first four places but all were disqualified.
