WARRINGTON Athletics Club achieved an avalanche of success in the North West Road Relays, incorporating the Cheshire Road Relays, at Heaton Park in Manchester on Saturday.

In the North West Championships, the highest position achieved came from the under 17s women team of Esme Heavey, Imogen Wharton and Hannah Hull who finished in second place overall, taking the Cheshire title in the process Heavey carried her track form onto the road, with the fastest individual time of 7mins 08secs.

The under 13s boys team of Euan Lawton, Isaac McGuffie and Oliver Davenport placed third overall and also took the Cheshire title.

Lawton and McGuffie ran the fastest two Cheshire times with 7mins 22secs and 7mins 24secs respectively.

At under 11s level, the girls’ first team of Bethany Roberts, Emilia Gandy and Charlotte Andrew came fourth overall, taking the Cheshire title and starting the avalanche of Cheshire medals.

The second team of Lois Johnson Starrs, Ettie Rashud and Edie McArthur were 23rd in the North West and took the Cheshire bronze medals.

Gandy ran the second fastest time in Cheshire with 5mins 48secs.

The boys’ first team of Alex Farrell, Tristan Tickle and Alfie Furnival finished sixth in the North West and took the Cheshire title. Farrell ran the second fastest Cheshire time with 5mins 24secs.

In the under 13s, the girls’ first team of Grace Rashud, Evie May Williams and Eva Hayes were 10th in North West and took the Cheshire title, while the second team of Ellie Grace Stuart, Annie Noone and April Rimmer were 22nd in North West and took the Cheshire bronze medals.

Rashud ran the fastest Cheshire time with 8mins 28secs.

At under 15s level, the girls first team of Emily Kinsey, Sinead Gregory and Sarah Ashcroft were eighth in North West and took the Cheshire title, with the second team of Ellie Barker, Cara Gregory and Orlaith Clarke 16th in North West and clinching the Cheshire silver medals.

Kinsey ran the fastest Cheshire time with 7mins 46secs.

In the under 17 men’s race, Jack Marwood, Jacob Pryor and Tom Welsby placed eighth in North West and second in Cheshire, with Marwood running the fastest time in the overall race with 13mins 16secs. The senior men’s first team of Brandon Quinton, Jordan Jones, Daniel Fox and Cameron Field were fifth in the North West and second in Cheshire.

Meanwhile, Warrington AC’s Steve Burthem was 50th overall in the Sandstone Trail Race which placed him second in the over 60s age group.

He clocked 2hrs 44mins 40secs for the 17.5 miles event, which included 650 metres of climbing in the hot weather.

Second-claim member Georgina Walker, running under her first-claim club Lymm Runners, was the third over 45s woman in 2hrs 50mins 07secs.

Louise Blizzard was third woman and second over 45 woman when crossing the line 44th overall in the South Cheshire 20 Miles Road Race at Crewe in 2hrs 33mins 16secs.

Two Warrington AC athletes took part in the UK Youth Development League Upper Age Final at Sportcity Manchester, representing their second-claim club Trafford.

In the under 17 men’s 100m hurdles, Lewis Shaw had a battle with the UK number one in the age group Rayhan Mourtada (Blackheath & Bromley) and finished in second place with a wind assisted time of 13.23secs, just 0.03secs outside the club record.

In the under 20 women’s 400m hurdles, Lisa Halliday finished fourth in 74.59secs despite suffering a fall at the final hurdle which had not been adjusted to the correct height.

She later ran in the B 100m hurdles recording 17.00secs to finish second despite her cuts and bruises from earlier in the day.

Dave Gill won the over 65 men’s 2000m steeplechase in the British Masters Athletic Championships at Moorways Stadium in Derby in 8mins 14.74secs.

The final Cheshire League meeting took place in sweltering conditions at Ellesmere Port with Warrington fielding a team depleted by holidays.

With many of the younger athletes trying events for the first time, they proved to be strong enough to win the match with many achieving personal best or near personal best performances.

The winners in the A events were Joe Williams (senior men’s 200m/long jump 26.1secs/5.37m), Dominic Ellis (senior men’s discus 25.18m), Alice Clare (senior women’s 200m 32.1secs), Fraser Savage (under 15s boys 100m/high jump 12.2secs/1.72m), Euan Lawton (under 13s boys 1500m 4mins 59.5secs), Ruben Evans-Guillen (under 13s boys javelin 24.06m), Luke Horman (under 11s boys soft javelin 16.45m), Tallie Sze (under 15s girls 200m/long jump 27.5secs/4.87m), Emily Kinsey (under 15s girls 1500m 5mins 13.7secs), Abigail Adelani (under 15s girls discus 21.39m) and Emilia Gandy (under 11s girls 600m 2mins 02.4secs.
