MIKE Dench started off his Thursday morning fishing session on the Bridgewater Canal at Red Lane, where he sat watching a motionless float for two hours before making the decision to pack up his tackle and head for Appleton Reservoir.

He had a poor start and was forced to move after being plagued by diving ducks whenever he fed any bait.

As it turned out, it was third time lucky when after feeding up his swim with his feeder packed with liquidised bread, caster and hemp with double red maggot on the hook, he started catching small roach which as time went improved in size up to 8oz.

After the first two attempts, Mike ended up with seven or 8lbs and a pleasant three hours’ fishing.

Andy Humphreys tried the stretch of the River Alyn at Hope on Sunday and found three or four swims suitable for trotting.

He had half a dozen grayling and the same number of brown trout in the 8oz to 12oz range on maggot – an enjoyable few hours in pleasant surroundings.

Attendance was poor at the Saturday members match on the Bridgewater Canal at Boothstown, which was won by Chorley angler Dave Moss with 2-11-0 of roach and perch caught on caster and worm. Ray Boden was in second place with 1-10-0.

The Mersey match on Sunday was a low weight affair albeit a close-run thing result-wise as winner Pete Howard took the top prize money with only an ounce to spare.

He put 2-15-0 of roach on the scales caught on groundbait feeder and maggot. Roy Everson took second place with 2-14-0 – ouch!

Our disabled and over 60s match was back on the Bridgewater Canal this week at Hough’s Bridge, where veteran angler Derek Bibby kicked off his 2020 winnings with 5-4-12 of small roach which were boosted by a 12oz skimmer and 6oz hybrid.

Derek fished pole and alternated between bread and pinkie. George Hollis was the runner-up with 4-8-8 of roach plus perch taken on pinkie.

Don’t forget to keep those reports coming as at this time of the year there is not a lot happening, so good, bad or indifferent they will help fellow members to plan any trips to the bankside.
