TELLING certain members of his Warrington Wolves squad they will not be playing at Wembley will involve some “tough discussions” for head coach Steve Price.

The Wire’s 19-man squad for Saturday’s Challenge Cup Final against Catalans Dragons was be named yesterday.

From that selection, two will miss out on the matchday squad to join those injured or not previously selected on the sidelines.

With only long-term injury absentees Ben Currie, Mitch Brown and Jack Johnson and the cup-tied Bodene Thompson unavailable, competition for places is fierce.

However, Price insists those not selected still have a big role to play.

“Sometimes it can be tough to take, but it’s about honesty and doing what’s right for the team,” he said.

“They are tough discussions to have, but we’re straight down the line and honest with each other.

“Winning teams do not just have 17 players. It takes a nucleus of 25-26 players all pulling in the same direction.

“For the guys who don’t make it, they fully understand the impact they can have on getting the team ready for the challenge.”

Thirteen members of Price’s squad have played at Wembley before, the majority in Challenge Cup Finals.

Bryson Goodwin has also appeared at the national stadium in New Zealand’s win over England in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup semi-finals.

Price believes that extra experience will be crucial on Saturday and thinks the wide-open spaces of Wembley will suit his team down to the ground.

“There’s massive excitement and a good buzz around the boys,” he said.

“We’ve got a number of lads who have played at Wembley before and they have said it’s the best week of their lives.

“We have to play in the moment and not think about all the externals.

“Wembley suits our style of play and what we do in offence and defence.

“We’ve got a number of players who have played in Challenge Cup Finals before so know what the place looks like and feels like.

“Hopefully, they will pass that on to the blokes who haven’t had that experience.

“It is important where you turn over the ball against Catalans. They do operate with a very high completion rate.”
