PAUL Carden says his Warrington Town side “totally deserved” their 1-0 victory over Barwell on Saturday.

Substitute Abou Sanogo grabbed the winner as Yellows moved up to second in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

However, Carden says only a lack of luck prevented them from winning by a clearer margin and said one player in particular bore the brunt in that respect.

“It’s pleasing how we responded to losing at Ashton, which was the main thing,” he said.

“It was a good win, a good performance and we totally deserved it.

“It could have been a lot bigger scoreline. They did have a few good chances, but we had a lot more.

“On another day, Jamie McDonald scores four goals. He was exceptional but was just lacking a bit of luck.

“He hit the woodwork, he’s gone through one-on-one and the keeper’s made a save he didn’t really know about.

“He also had a couple of penalty shouts, one I thought was a definite penalty, but sometimes you get them and sometimes you don’t.”

Carden did, however, admit Sanogo’s winner, a cross which looped over home goalkeeper Max Smith-Varnum, had “a bit of fortune” about it.

The tall midfielder scored just over 10 minutes after coming off the bench and the Yellows boss says the game needed his “unpredictability.”

“The game was needing something a little bit different,” Carden said.

“We had a lot of good play, we never lacked cutting edge but we weren’t getting a great deal of luck.

“It was going to drift away into being a 0-0, so we made the change and Abou got us the winner.

“His goal had a bit of fortune in it, but we’d created a lot of chances before that and we’ll take them however they come.

“He’s got that unpredictability and that was the case on Saturday.”
