THE Warrington Revolution flag football team are hoping a tournament win on home soil can propel them towards a place in a regular league.

The club are hosting the V-Day tournament on Saturday, August 5, at Gorse Covert Primary School in Birchwood and teams from across the country are coming to take part.

Flag football is a non-contact version of American football, where tackles are made by dislodging flags attached to players’ waists.

Revolution’s head coach Anthony Lloyd says the standard of competition will be high but is confident his side can keep the trophy in Warrington.

Lloyd also explained in greater detail how flag football differs from the more well-known version.

“We’re keen to put on a good show in our home town,” he said.

“There will be some strong teams coming but we are expecting to go far.

“We’re confident we’ll have eight teams playing, with some of them coming a long way to take part so it should be a cracking day.

“It would be great to get a big crowd down there so we can showcase flag football to a wider audience.

“In American football, you have four downs to make 10 yards. In flag football, you have four downs to get to half way, then another four to score a touchdown.”

Lloyd is hopeful the tournament will help his side in their preparations for league action.

“You have to complete a developmental year before joining the league, so we will start league play in April next year.

“We’ve played 12 games since our formation, winning 10 and losing two.

“We’ve been playing friendlies that mirror the league format against other developmental teams.

“The two games we have lost have been against league sides, so we’ve done well so far.”

Fellow north west teams Wigan Bandits and Chorley Buccaneers are confirmed to be taking part in the tournament, with Northants Titans and Rugby Racoons also set to compete.

The action gets underway at 10am and there will be a family fun day running alongside the event with refreshments available.

For those wanting to watch the action from indoors, the games will be live streamed at the nearby Poacher pub on Gorse Covert Road.
