WOLVES need to take their chances if they are to win the League Leaders’ Shield at Hull FC tomorrow, Friday, head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith says.

The Wire go into the match at the KCOM Stadium, kick off 8pm, leading the Super 8s table and needing only to avoid defeat to clinch the trophy.

However, defeat will mean the Black and Whites will snatch top spot from them.

Wolves, who fill face either Wigan or St Helens in next week’s semi-final, have lost all three meetings with the Black and Whites this season, including last month’s Challenge Cup Final at Wembley, but Smith knows what his side need to do to reverse that.

“No team has dominated the other from start to finish so it’s a matter of staying in there for a little longer than they do,” he said.

“There hasn’t been much between the two teams all the way through.

“We need to be clinical. We’ve been guilty of not executing our opportunities when they arise.

“There’s been times when we’ve had them on the rack and they’ve fought back so we need to keep them under pressure a little longer.”

Smith’s side will have to do without Ben Currie as scans revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, which has a recovery time of between six and nine months.

Kurt Gidley will also miss the game with a hamstring strain, which leaves Wolves with problems in the halves as Chris Sandow has not recovered from a knee injury.

Stefan Ratchford will switch to stand-off and partner Dec Patton, with Matty Russell moving to full-back.

Wingers Tom Lineham and Kevin Penny are expected to start against Lee Radford’s side.

Smith is confident the players coming in can do the job of putting Friday’s 35-28 defeat to Wigan behind them.

“It’s unfortunate but we’re happy with the changes that we’ve got. It represents an opportunity for these guys to make a mark,” he said.

“It was a little quiet around here for the first couple of days this week, it took a bit longer to dust ourselves down than it has in some other weeks.

“We’ve bounced back now, we understand the ramifications and we’re fighting as hard as we can. It’s important we push past these things and learn lessons along the way.”
