WARRINGTON gymnast Lucy Stanhope is hoping to continue her good form at the upcoming School Games.

The 14-year-old, a pupil at Bridgwater High School, will travel to Loughborough next month to test herself against the best young talent Great Britain has to offer on September 1-4.

In June, she was part of a five-strong national team that finished second behind Russia at the Junior European Championships in Switzerland.

More than 1,000 of the country’s finest athletes will gather to compete across a dozen Olympic and Paralympic sports.

And the talented gymnast says she is now full of confidence as she looks to make progress on home soil.

“The season has been going really well,” she said.

“The silver medal was awesome – I was so happy after that.

“It was amazing because we were not expected to do so well.

“We only had one fall, and that did not have to count anyway so all of our scores were technically our best.

“I am really confident of doing well in the School Games.

“I know I can do it, it’s a case of doing it again in another competition and repeating what I did in the Europeans.”

Stanhope has competed in the School Games before, in 2013, when she was part of an England squad that won team gold.

However she was disappointed with her individual performance, something she is determined to put right this time around.

“Training has been geared to Loughborough for the past few weeks so that I am in the best possible shape for the School Games.

“I am looking forward to it.

“I took part three years ago and it was not my best, but I have worked hard and I’m a better gymnast now.

“England won gold then and we want to do the same again.

“I’m hoping to do beam or bar, but I’m focused mainly on getting it all right.

“I have been working on getting a little bit better, and making sure I am doing those things the judges want to see.”

Competition starts next Friday.
