LATEST COLUMN FROM WARRINGTON ANGLERS' ASSOCIATION

NEIL Plunkett always finds time to fish, a charmed life of which I’m extremely jealous!

To quote him, ‘spring has sprung’, something he’s proved over the past few days.

Last Tuesday, he landed nine tench from Grey Mist Mere – most of those 5lbs or more.

The next day, six carp – the best around 10lbs – followed from the Mount Fishery at Buckley.

On Saturday a dozen bream and three roach came from Cicely Mill Pool and, following a rest on Sunday, he attacked Rixton Clay Pits.

A highlight was one bite developing into a screaming run and yards of line ripped from his reel before Neil took control, resulting in one of our newly-stocked commons weighing an estimated 12lbs.

Who says Ackers Pit is dead? Certainly not Martin Egan.

He approached a session on Sunday with a waggler, hemp and caster set-up, catching from the off with almost every cast resulting in a bite.

He then fished closer in, where he had previously baited-up, catching red-fins at every put-in to increase his total haul for the day towards 50.

Mike Pritchard visited Statham Pool last week and, fishing his favourite waggler tactics, started off with pinkie over depth.

He was soon into skimmers and hybrids, but after losing five carp he changed tactics.

Caster and hemp accounted for between 8 and 9lbs of roach.

A few days of warmer weather was followed by successive heavy frosts that more or less guaranteed another week of poor sport for our disabled and over 60s match regulars.

George Barber fished pole and bread punch, needing only 1-3-8 to take first place.

A working party to remove weed at Grey Mist Mere is scheduled for Saturday, so there will be no fishing between 10am and 4pm.

The team would welcome any offers of help.

Our headquarters at Parker Street are open every Friday, from 7pm, for memberships, subscriptions, night-permit renewals and any queries.
