EUROPEAN Tour golfer Phil Archer is in Ireland this week after recording the best result of his career in Spain on Sunday.

The Birchwood Golf Club professional, who starts the Irish Open in Limerick today, Thursday, finished joint second after a late charge for victory at the Valle Romano Open de Andalucia in Marbella.

After making a maiden Tour win his target for 2007, Archer had a slow start to the season but has now rocketed to 50th on the European Tour Order of Merit after his performance in Spain.

The 35-year-old produced his previous career best at the same event last year, finishing tied third, but went one better this time after finishing on 18 under par to earn just under £60,000 in prize money.

Rounds of 69 and 70 put him in a good position but he finished in stunning fashion with rounds of 66 and 65, moving to within one shot of the lead on the last day with an eagle on the 16th hole before Lee Westwood eventually won by two shots.
