WARRINGTON Wolves fired in patches and that was enough to secure a comfortable win against a plucky Barrow Raiders side in the fifth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup on Sunday.

Those among the lowest home crowd of the season who had hoped for a massacre would have left The Halliwell Jones Stadium disappointed, with Wolves accumulating two points less than the previous week's 50 points against Super League side Salford.

Wolves, fielding an unchanged team for the first time this season, certainly should have scored more points than they did against the National League Two table toppers.

That they did not can be attributed to the tenacity of the depleted Cumbrian part-timers, who fought to the death against an international-packed Wolves side that produced a performance littered with handling errors.

Full back Stuart Reardon dropped a clearance kick while under no pressure, Brent Grose threw a pass intended for Richie Barnett into touch, Martin Gleeson did the same on the other flank - and that was all in the opening eight minutes!

Barrow's confidence visibly grew from that and their reward was three tries from kicks, including an enterprising last try of the game touched down by winger Nick Beach from a Michael Basan kick straight from a scrum.

Warrington's highlight was a hat-trick of tries from in-form stand off Vinnie Anderson, taking his total to six in three games.

The Kiwi's first two efforts were a reward for magnificent support play, getting on the end of breaks by Adrian Morley and Rob Parker, while his third from a Lee Briers reverse-angle kick shows that he has developed a good understanding at half back with Wolves' skipper.

Anderson, since signing from St Helens at the end of last season, has shown commitment, motivation and great ability to read a game, having the knack to pop up in the right place at the right time.

Wolves will need a lot more of that from him and the rest of his teammates if they are to progress further in the competition.
