MICHAEL Monaghan's signing this week highlights once again that some of the greatest half backs in the world game have made appearances for Warrington Rugby League Club.

That includes Australian superstar Andrew Johns, going back to local hero and Great Britain tourist Gerry Helme - a legend from Warrington's highly successful 1950s era.

Johns may have only made three appearances as a loan player from Newcastle Knights at the end of 2005, but his impact on the club and town was massive as he helped to steer Wolves into the play offs.

Allan Langer was a similar hit with the club in 2000 and 2001, helping Wolves to two Challenge Cup semi finals appearances.

He was joined in 2001 by fellow ex-Kangaroo half back Kevin Walters, although he went home early because of family reasons.

And there is still current ace Lee Briers to rave about and former Great Britain internationals like Kevin Ellis, Andy Gregory, John Woods, Ken Kelly, Reg Bowden, Alex Murphy, Willie Aspinall, Bobby Greenough, Ray Price and Bryn Knowelden, as well as Aussies Nathan Wood, Greg Mackey, Phil Blake and Bobby Fulton.

Paul Bishop made a name for himself with Warrington, too, as did Jackie Edwards - the father of Shaun.

And let's not forget Parry Gordon - perhaps the greatest scrum half this country has produced but not selected for Great Britain - and Kiwi internationals Cec Mountford and Kelly Shelford, while current GB players Iestyn Harris and Paul Sculthorpe also starred at half back for Warrington at the beginning of their careers.
