TONY Smith intends to put a smile on Warrington Wolves fans’ faces with a ‘derby’ win over rivals Widnes Vikings.
Wolves have lost on their last two visits to the Select Security Stadium, but Smith says it is time to put that right on Thursday night.
“For players and fans alike, the rivalry between the two clubs has been enormous and it’ll be a huge turnout,” said Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby.
“Unfortunately we haven’t handled it a couple of times over there and it’s been tough on our fans.
“We want to pay a little bit back this week, give them a smile and something to cheer about for their travel back.”
Smith also insists the i-pitch at Widnes will not be a problem or an excuse for Wolves, who train on a similar surface at their new indoor facility in Padgate.
“They see it as a huge advantage but we’re not buying into that,” he said. “We train on a similar pitch indoors nowadays so I don’t know how much of an advantage it is.
“It certainly won’t be an excuse or an issue. We’re going over to play good rugby league, and if we do that it won’t matter what surface we’re playing on.
“We’re looking forward to it; we’ve had a kick up the backside last week with our form.”
