Warrington 2nd 28 De La Salle 2nd 25
WARRINGTON’S second team maintained their fifth position in Standish Media Services Division One with this conclusive win over De La Salle.
Mathematically, they could still rise to third but promotion is now a task for next season.
Warrington opened the scoring through the trusty boot of Andy Almond and then the same player added a further seven points when a missed pass from Matt Rockey hit his knee but bounced up into his hands, allowing him to stride over and then kick the conversion.
De La Salle replied with a well-taken try and a penalty to level the scores before Glenn Howsen executed a perfect pick-and-go to take the opposition by surprise and score.
Andy Almond again added the extras.
Andy Almond’s boot increased the Warrington lead to 13 points early in the second half but the visitors came back strongly with a second converted try.
Matt Rockey virtually clinched the game for Warrington when he waltzed over in the corner but De La Salle came back again with an unconverted try and a penalty but Warrington had the strength to hang on.
“This was a close thing,” said skipper Andy Almond.
“But a win is a win.
“We now look forward to finishing in style against Leigh next week – and to next season.”
