Warrington Guardian: Important win for Grappenhall Sports Important win for Grappenhall Sports

Grappenhall Sports 2 Golborne Sports 0

SPORTS picked up back-to-back wins and a vital three points at home against a very well organised Golborne side who have been in the top six of Cheshire Football League Division Two for a large part of the season.

The first half was a tight affair with limited chances for both sides.

However, the chances that came along were good ones.

First Sports put together a lovely move allowing Adam Rosterne to slot Josh Dagley in behind to cross brilliantly for Tom Swann who could only head over from six yards.

Golborne, with a very sharp counter attack, were then unlucky when their captain cut inside from the right to force a great low save from Jody Lewis with the help of the post.

Then on the stroke of half time Jordan Rigby missed a great chance when he headed wide from a Rosterne free kick.

At the break Darren Davies asked his men to make better decisions in the final third and stay concentrated at the back.

Sports started the second half brightly and for the first time managed to sustain some pressure and maintain better possession of the football.

Then on the hour mark another Rosterne free kick was volleyed home by Ben Howard and Sports had the all important lead.

Changes were made soon after with top scorer Dan Sisson coming on alongside the creative James Derbyshire.

Both players made an immediate impact as Derbyshire hit a superb 25-yard drive well saved by the keeper before Dan Sisson hit a brilliant first time shot under pressure against the post after a majestic run and cross from Matt Ball.

Golborne rallied late on in search of the equaliser and Sports began to become nervy.

Golborne had two good chances to draw level in the final 10 minutes and on the stroke of full time Ben Howard was harshly red carded for a second yellow for a foul on the halfway line.

From the resulting free kick everyone bar the taker was in and around the Sports box.

Sports defended it well and broke quickly, allowing Derbyshire to slot Chris Sweeney in who ran from inside his own half to put a lovely chip over the keeper to secure the points.

Davies said: "I was delighted with the character.

“We have played better and not been rewarded but we dug deep and got the points that I feel we deserved.

“It was vital we backed up last week’s win and we have done that at a crucial time.

“With the league looking to expand to three divisions it is imperative we get a top 11 place and secure a spot in the middle tier and you could see the lads are really up for the challenge and making sure we do everything we can to achieve our goal."
